I was scammed big time

In January of 2011 Vestal Builders sent Mark to my home to give estimate to install a bathroom in basement. He took almost 3,000.00 and never did a *** lick of work. I hope all these people rot in *** for what they did. I sued and won but they packed up and had moved on beware of these evil doers!!!! They make up excuses why they have not been back to start work but its all lies. They will say that someone was fired for some bogus reason but trust me they are all in it together BIG SCAMMERS!!

The below paragraph should read, \"Materials were *NOT* purchased on time.\"

Original review Nov 17, 2011
I worked for Vestal Builders as a subcontractor on three bathroom remodels earlier this summer (2011). After the third job, I told Matt I no longer wanted to work for them when he asked me to do a kitchen remodel. Every job was a nightmare because materials were purchased on time, communication was terrible, and because Matt, at the time, was being driven everywhere by his wife because his license had been suspended. Also, Matt seemed to have no clue what he was talking about when it came to how things should be done; he was very good at talking his way through problems, but I'm not sure you'd want him actually working on your bathroom, never mind anything structural. By the end of the last job, I decided sitting at home was better than working for Vestal Builders. Fortunately, I've since found work with a real contractor. I could give a long laundry list of things to beware of, but the long and short of it is that Vestal Builder's isn't organized enough and doesn't pay well enough to keep competent subcontractors and employees. They have a rotating door of employees and subcontractors, and it is no wonder. I don't think they are malevolent and intend to do wrong at the outset of a job; they are just incompetent, disorganized, and lack the moral fiber to make things right to the end if an issue arises. They seem to have no clue about how to run a business. For instance, when I went to work for them, *I* drew up contracts and made them sign them; they had no contracts or agreements for me to sign, and didn't even ask for a signed copy of the contracts I drew up. The customer contracts I saw were vague and non-specific, and looked like they had been drawn on a napkin. If you are a sub, you will be constantly chasing Matt for your money, and constantly being fed BS or getting completely ignored. The customers I worked for were being hounded for the rest of the money before the jobs were even completed. I've had to take Vestal Builder's to small claims court to recover the costs on the last two jobs; the judgement was in my favour but I have still heard neither hide nor hair from them in terms of payment. I don't really want to have a court seizure of property, but I'm afraid it will come to that. All three of the customers I worked for were happy with my work, but each of them would tell you how much of a nightmare it was to deal with Vestal. I actually just went to the job of the first customer (in October), whose job I worked at in June, and Vestal still had not picked up all the garbage from the job. There are plenty of good contractors out there looking for work in this economy; ask your friends for their recommendations and don't be tricked by the fancy advertisements and pleasant demeanor of a Vestal salesman. Stay away from Vestal Builders at all costs - the sweetness of a good price fades far faster than the bitterness of poor quality.

I've since received my money through the courts; Vestal contacted me only 2x during the whole process, and then only to lie and tell me the check was in the mail in order to keep me from going ahead with my action. I've talked to others who have dealt with Vestal, and I take back what I said about them not being malevolent. It's now my opinion that they purposefully hire subs with no intention of paying them for their work, knowing that most people won't bother going through the trouble of getting their money through small claims court.

Vestal Builders

Vestal Builders has recently been on the local news for scamming unsuspecting customers and not completing work that they were paid for. The news ran on channel 3 out of Kalamazoo, MI. Their website is wwmt.com. Just put Vestal Builders into their search. In addition, this news indicated that Mandy had filed for a DBA in her name in Paw Paw to open a new business Legacy Exteriors of Michiana and they will be focusing their business in the southwest Michigan/Indiana area. I guess they have scammed all the subcontractors and customers in this area and it's time to change areas to get more business. There is an excuse from Mandy for most of the complaints on these websites. However, it is not typical to have the number of complaints they do. Excuses do not get you far, own up to the fact that you are unethical, incompetent, and full of excuses and lies---why else would you be supposedly closing Vestal Builders, changing your name, and Matthew being accused of fraud? Please be sure to check out a number of reputable resources for the caliber of work performed by Vestal Builders (aka Reliable Home Improvement"”name was changed on insiderpages.com) and/or any business operating under the name of Matthew or Mandy Vestal. Charges are pending for fraud for Matthew Vestal. We have found numerous reviews from customers and subcontractors on insiderpages.com, pissedconsumer.com, topix.com, and various others. In addition, they have countless complaints under the Better Business Bureau. If you have a complaint and/or judgement against Vestal Builders, please go to Michigan.gov and the Dept. of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA). The web address is: http://www.michigan.gov/lara/0,4601,7-154-3****_*5395_3****---,00.html This is the department that regulates Builders Licenses. In addition, we have submitted complaints and filed a report with the State Police post out of Paw Paw. They indicated there was not enough people coming forward on these cases and therefore, the prosecuting attorney would not pick up the case. However, if more people--sounds like there are numerous--- file with the State Police, I'm sure the prosecuting attorney would pick it up. This is horribly unethical for Vestal Builders to continue to steal from customers and subcontractors and get away with everything they are getting away with. Vestal Builders does do a few things right---not answer calls, ignore people once they have your money, make excuses, and run away. Also, beware of any pending business names or future Builders Licenses for the Vestal family.

I'll sign my name on the complaint list, as a sub contractor. I traveled all over from Kalamazoo Michigan to Indianapolis indiana, from Chicago il to Fort Wayne indiana, and they never paid me a dime after racking up a very large bill with me.

Matt Vestal is still scamming people out of money. The new company name he does this under is Curb Appeal. Do not use this this company or Matt and Mandy Vestal for anything at all, they will scam you!

Guest

I feel bad for everyone of you. I was called to do a 3 layer tear off of a roof and over decking by a customer.

Only to learn that he gave Vestal $5000.00 for the job and the only thing he did was to pull a permit. It's sad these people had to lose so much hard earned money. I was able to ease thier fears by not accepting any down payment until delivery of materials and provided them with top quality trusted references. In the end, the customer was completely happy and we have seen multiple referrals from this project.

Vestal replaced my roof a few years ago. It looks really nice, but they shut down the work until I came up with $2700.00 for them to install a new layer of plywood over my trusses.

Then they never returned to properly install the soffits.

Now I have water leaking into my house around the chimney flashings. I don't know how much it'll cost to fix the plaster and properly seal the chimney.

I am very interested in recovering losses I suffered. Vestal got me for $2475.00 plus court costs.

A court officer drove out to the business but they had packed up and moved on owing the landlord as well. I would be sooooo grateful if these people were prosecuted fully!!!

If you have a contract or some proof that you worked for them, sue them in small claims court. It cost me around $150 up front in the end, but the courts recovered my costs for me when I sued them. Unfortunately, if they are out of business/bankrupt, you may be out of luck.

You are a subcontractor. You have the right to put a mechanics lien on the home if you havent waited too long

Accepted our money and never did the job.

We hired Vestal Builders on 6/10/11 for a kitchen remodel and a re-frame on our pool pump area. The salesman agreed that this would all be completed by 07/04/2011. The co. measured 3 times and the job was not being done. They had many excuses about firing employees and not having staff to do the job, vehicles that wouldn't run, just a whole lot of excuses. I called many times and spoke with many people, to no avail. We did get the re-frame done, by a new guy and he did a good job. But the kitchen is still not done. I was given many dates that they would be starting but they never did. We had bought new appliances for the kitchen and they had a 90 day return policy. I think I forgot to mention, my husband was doing this for me and paid them in full on the contract date of 06/10/2011. 2 wks ago, I sent a letter telling them to return our money, several thousand dollars. Well they are still not responding. I have spoke to many employees and they all seem very sincere on the phone, but then they never call back. Also, during this time period I had 3 calls from Vestal builders saying that we had, had an initial meeting and would we like to have the work done. I then explained that we had contracted and paid and the work is not getting done................... We will go to court if we do not receive our money back and I am filing complaints everywhere I can. License Bureau and BBB. I will also make it my mission to let as many people know that I can in the Kalamazoo area. I work in the medical field and my husband works in a large company, one e-mail will reach thousands of people in the area. I will report back if they return our money.

Took deposit and ran

After giving the salesman my deposit, for what appeared to be only a small roof repair. Vestal Builders took my money and ran. It only took them a couple days to cash my check and I have not heard from them since. The salesman Mark is a scam artist in his own right. trying to get me to do a roof over after he said the roof over all looked pretty good. I have been only able to talk to Mandy once after almost a dozen left messages. She stated they would be there the next day. I am still waiting. Never use Matt or Mandy for nothing.

Retards with Hammers--Vestal Builders paw paw Mich.

Last summer, we hired this sorry company to build a sunroom onto the house. They seemed like nice people, little did we know we were in for one *** of a nightmare. Matt Vestal (owner) quoted us a fair price and that it would take 3 weeks. We were like, "Great! When can you start?" Well, the *** kept putting it back repeatedly until finally they started working. Throughout the building process, days would go by where they never showed up for work. We tried calling and complaining and the *** kept hiding behind his monkeys for protection and never wanted to talk to us. Then there was the window ordeal. Rick, his partner, fricken ordered the wrong size windows. We wanted 6ft by 4ft windows and he ordered 5ft by 4ft. I complained and he said, "why don't you just stick with these ones?" WTF!!!! Because this is my house and we are paying you to do it the way we want! Order want we want or your fired, like seriously! Who says that!? They also hid a bunch of trash (scrap metal and siding) behind our shed in some pine trees. After all this *** was done, the 3 week project turned into 5 months. What a nightmare, we had to deal with their idiocy, take care of THEIR mess, and the workers stole our shovel and rakes but I was so done with them I didn't bother to *** about that. Save yourself the headaches and pay more for an honest, friendly, credible company.

It's funny, though - for someone who is anonymous, it sure sounds like they know Vestal Builders. What is also funny is that you respond to a review two days after it is posted on the internet, but you can't seem to be bothered to communicate with your customers and subcontractors with the same speed.

Guest

This is the most fake review ever. We have not had an empployee work for us named Rick in two years.

We have not built a sun room in probably five years.

If this was a real complaint, they would have used their name. This is a fired contracter or competetion hiding behind the Anonymous option to bash our business.

DO NOT HIRE VESTAL BUILDERS PAW PAW MI

These idiots are horrible. They started a five day project which took 5 MONTHS. They measured my kitchen to remodel it THREE times and still didn't get it right!! Matt and Mandy Vestal are two of a kind - unethical, theives, liars, manipulators, immature and totally unreliable. Downhome hicks for podunk Paw Paw MI. They cashed my check and didn't even get back with me for 2 weeks to set anything up. Then they sent over one subcontractor after another (fired the first one) to measure and no one knew what they were doing. Matt Vestal (owner/arrogant ***) shows up and does the same thing (no clue and that was only one of to times he even came to my home) then delivers my countertop WITHOUT the kitchen sink installed in it so he had to eat $600 of his own money. Constant lies, constant excuses, constant delays and won't give me information about WHERE the kitchen cabinets they installed on MY property came from - DO NOT even think about hiring these jerks!

Vestal Builders ran $3,500 worth of advertising in the Auto & RV publications and we never received payment. Oh yea, we heard all the excuses too...finally gave up on these liars and thieves too.

Guest

Five day project took two weeks ,workmanship poor, now three months later we have a leak and Cannt get them to fix it

Guest

Vestal builders did the worst job on my bathroom I have ever seen. the tile was crooked, the gaps were from 3/4 in to 1/16 in less than five feet.

They DID try to correct the problems but only made them worse. Problem 1: The owner should check up on the work being done so that issues can be fixed early.

after the cement is dry there is only one choice. rip and replace.

They are nice people, but should be in sewing or arts and crafts

WOW - what a quick response! And no wonder since I'm sure you're used to getting complaints on this site and others.

Such as: 18 complaints and a score of "F" with the BBB. A compliance conference held with the Bureau of Commercial Services, Michigan Attorney General's office Complaint #315534 which can be requested through the FOIA. Not to mention you still haven't spoken to, returned calls or e-mails with the "current contractor" for 8 weeks! Thank God he knows what he's doing!

He complained in an e-mail ONCE and that was when he first met me when I had to warn him about your ***. He has totally changed his tune in my favor since he's so frustrated with your ignoring him for no good reason and your just plain ignorance period! As just one example: you NEVER ONCE gave him any plans or drawings so he had to fly blind after he asked for them twice and all you had to do was fax them or e-mail them. Not to mention never once drawing up a proposal itemizing cost and work to be done on my kitchen after I asked for these several times.

How professional! Yeah, I'd definitely recommend you...

NOT!! You will never be successful - what gives you the right to treat people this way and put their lives on hold??

Guest

As a reply to Ms. Thomas's complaint...I can understand your frustration regarding the incorrect ordering of the countertop, and that has been corrected and was not an "***" mistake, yet was a mistake.

We have apologized numerous times for that mistake. You have absolutely no reason to stoop to calling us thieves, manipulators, unethical or any of the other names. There was not "one subcontractor after another sent over. There was ONE salesman that sold your job (he was fired at a later date, that was correct, but he was not a builder), there was a designer that you requested come to pick your materials out at stores in your area (again, not a subcontractor, and not fired.

On every other remodel we have done, the customer has never requested that someone come pick out materials with them, but we paid him to come shop with you), we did have a builder come for the final measure, and you agreed on the layout of the kitchen. Then, when you had questions, Matt came out to go over the layout again, and although it was exactly the same, you agreed to that as well. As far as us taking two weeks to come out for the measure, there has to be some time for the builder to be scheduled to be there to measure. That is not an unusual amount of time.

We do have more than one job going. Which also answers the issue as to Matt only being at your home twice, how many times would you expect the owner of a company to come to your home? If you hire Hansons or Sears, do you think the owner would ever come to your home? We hire people to work on the day to day functions of the projects. We both came out on a Sunday to answer your questions.

Per the contractor currently completing the project, you have complained at every step, and have attempted to receive work for free. You even complained to me about the height of the standard microwave cabinet, that you chose, because you were too short to reach it. How could that be our fault? As soon as we received the confirmation of the material you chose, we ordered it.

And as soon as it was in, we had our production manager at your home,on a Saturday,to deliver it to the installer. Regarding the cabinets, as has been explained to you numerous times as well, we are the distributors of the cabinets. We work with a wholesaler to obtain the samples and order the cabinets. We carry the warranty, the marketing, etc.

It is not as though this is secret information, it is the truth. The only valid complaint that you have is the counter top being ordered incorrectly, which was corrected.

Took the money and left a mess

We hired Vestal builders in May 2011. We had to fire them due to the fact they don't use licensed employees as the law requires. After four months we fired them. Won a judgement in court and haven't heard a peep. Guess this is a lost cause. Learned a hard lesson. Btw the work was sub standard and didn't pass the calhoun county / battle creek inspections and actually was dangerous. Looks like we will join the group listed here as pissed off customers. Additionally they didn't even pay the people that they sent to do the work!!!!
